Visakhapatnam:

A CBI court in Visakhapatnam today convicted Ragam Kishore, former Assistant General Manager of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), sentencing him to three years imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs. 1 lakh in a long-pending disproportionate assets (DA) case.

Kishore, who served in various capacities including Regional Manager, Branch Transport & Shipping, SAIL, Visakhapatnam, was charged with possessing assets vastly disproportionate to his known sources of income during the period January 1, 1988 to April 19, 2000.

According to the CBI, Kishore accumulated movable and immovable assets worth Rs. 60,25,825.65 in his name and in the names of his family members—assets he allegedly failed to account for satisfactorily.

The CBI registered the case on 17 July 2001, and after completing a detailed investigation, filed the chargesheet on 5 August 2003. The case proceeded through an extended trial phase, ultimately resulting in today’s conviction.

The court, after examining the evidence presented by the prosecution, held Kishore guilty under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and awarded the sentence accordingly.

The conviction marks a significant development in a case that has spanned more than two decades, reinforcing the CBI’s stance on pursuing corruption cases involving public servants to their logical conclusion.
