Amid widespread operational disruptions at IndiGo that have led to significant flight delays and cancellations, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has moved swiftly to curb what it described as “unusually high” airfares being charged on several affected routes. Concerned about potential opportunistic pricing during a period of uncertainty for thousands of travellers, the Ministry has invoked its regulatory authority to enforce strict fare disciplines across the aviation sector.
According to an official statement issued on Saturday, MoCA has directed all airlines to comply with newly prescribed fare caps that take immediate effect. These caps will remain in place until operations normalise and market conditions stabilise. The Ministry noted that the decision aims to prevent distress passengers—particularly senior citizens, students, and those travelling for medical needs—from facing undue financial burden.
“The objective is to ensure fair and reasonable pricing during this period of disruption,” the statement said, emphasising that no airline will be permitted to breach the mandated limits. The government stressed that pricing discipline is essential to maintaining public trust, especially during a crisis affecting aviation operations nationwide.
To ensure full compliance, MoCA is implementing real-time monitoring of fare movements through coordinated data tracking with airlines and online travel agencies. Officials confirmed that any violation of the prescribed norms will prompt “immediate corrective action” in the interest of passengers.
The Ministry reassured the public that it is in constant touch with affected carriers and is overseeing mitigation efforts to restore normalcy at the earliest. Meanwhile, airlines across the board have been asked to prioritise passenger support, ensure timely refunds where necessary, and communicate transparently about schedule disruptions.
The government’s intervention comes at a time when travellers across India have reported sudden fare spikes and limited availability following IndiGo’s operational challenges, prompting widespread calls for regulatory oversight.
