India–Jordan Ties Reach New Heights as Prime Minister Narendra Modi Visits Amman.

India and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan reaffirmed their long-standing friendship and agreed to significantly expand bilateral cooperation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Jordan on December 15–16, 2025. The visit, undertaken at the invitation of His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, lending special significance to the engagement.
The two leaders acknowledged the deep-rooted relationship between India and Jordan, marked by mutual trust, warmth and goodwill. They positively reviewed the wide-ranging bilateral partnership encompassing political dialogue, economic cooperation, defence and security, culture, education, health, agriculture and technology. Both sides emphasized their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels.
Political Engagements and Strategic Partnership
Prime Minister Modi and King Abdullah II held bilateral and expanded delegation-level talks in Amman on December 15, focusing on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest and supporting each other’s development aspirations. The leaders welcomed the regularity of political consultations and joint working group meetings, noting the successful Fourth Round of Political Consultations held in Amman in April 2025. They agreed that the next round would be convened in New Delhi.
Recalling their earlier meetings in New York, Riyadh, Dubai and Italy, the leaders reiterated their determination to maintain the positive momentum in bilateral relations through sustained high-level interactions and institutional mechanisms.
Expanding Economic and Trade Cooperation
Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. The leaders noted that bilateral trade reached USD 2.3 billion in 2024, making India Jordan’s third-largest trading partner. They agreed on the need to diversify the trade basket and decided to convene the 11th Trade and Economic Joint Committee in the first half of 2026 to further strengthen economic ties.
The Jordan–India Business Forum, held on the sidelines of the visit on December 16, brought together high-level business delegations from both countries to explore new opportunities for trade, investment and private-sector collaboration. Both sides also emphasized the importance of customs cooperation and agreed to fully utilize the existing agreement on mutual administrative assistance to facilitate trade and combat customs-related offences.
Recognizing Jordan’s strategic geographic location and advanced logistics capabilities, the leaders underlined the potential for enhanced cooperation in transport and logistics connectivity as a means to advance shared economic interests.
Technology, Digital Transformation and Education
The two sides reviewed cooperation in digital technology and education, agreeing to collaborate on capacity building, digital transformation initiatives and feasibility studies for implementing digital solutions. They welcomed the signing of a Letter of Intent on sharing India’s experience in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and committed to working together to ensure a safe, secure and inclusive digital environment.
Both leaders expressed interest in expanding the India–Jordan Centre of Excellence in Information Technology at Al Hussein Technical University. India also reiterated its commitment to capacity building through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme. Jordan welcomed the increase in ITEC training slots from 35 to 50 for the current year.
Cooperation in Health, Agriculture and Water
Healthcare cooperation was highlighted as a key pillar of the bilateral partnership, with both sides agreeing to collaborate in telemedicine, training of healthcare professionals and pharmaceutical cooperation in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
In agriculture, the leaders emphasized food security and nutrition, reviewing existing cooperation in fertilizers, particularly phosphates, and agreeing to expand collaboration through technology and expertise exchange. They also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Water Resources Management and Development, focusing on water-saving technologies, climate adaptation, capacity building and aquifer management.
Green Growth, Culture and Connectivity
The leaders discussed climate change, sustainable development and renewable energy, welcoming the signing of an MoU on Technical Cooperation in New and Renewable Energy. The agreement provides for joint research, training, technology exchange and non-commercial transfer of expertise.
Cultural ties received a boost with the signing of the Cultural Exchange Programme for 2025–2029 and a Twinning Agreement between Petra and the Ellora Caves, aimed at archaeological development and people-to-people engagement.
Recognizing the importance of connectivity, both sides agreed to explore possibilities for enhancing direct connectivity to promote trade, tourism and deeper people-to-people exchanges.
Multilateral Cooperation and Global Initiatives
King Abdullah II praised India’s leadership in global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the Global Biofuels Alliance. India welcomed Jordan’s interest in joining these platforms, noting the role of biofuels in achieving decarbonization and sustainable development.
At the conclusion of the visit, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to King Abdullah II for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation, and conveyed his best wishes for the continued progress and prosperity of Jordan. His Majesty, in turn, extended his sincere wishes to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India for further growth and prosperity, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two nations.
