HP Vidhan Sabha speaker accepts resignation of three independent MLAS in Himachal on Monday.

Shimla:

Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania made a significant announcement on Monday June 3, confirming the acceptance of resignations from three Independent MLAs – Hoshiyar Singh (Dehra), Ashish Sharma (Hamirpur), and K L Thakur (Nalagarh) from their membership in the HP Vidhan Sabha.

These MLAs, who had previously supported the Congress government under Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, tendered their resignations on March 22. Their decision came following the state’s Rajya Sabha election on February 27, where they voted in favor of BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan, leading to the unexpected victory of Mahajan over Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

After joining the BJP on March 22, the MLAs urged the Speaker to acknowledge their resignations, staging protests and even taking legal action. Notably, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi and Education Minister Rohit Thakur also petitioned the Speaker to address the MLAs’ defection under the Anti-Defection Act.

With the Speaker now accepting their resignations, the three MLAs no longer hold membership in the 14th Vidhan Sabha. However, the decision on the petition regarding their alleged breach of anti-defection laws will be deliberated upon later.

This development has implications for the political landscape in Himachal Pradesh, particularly as it impacts the representation in the state assembly. Additionally, the delay in holding by-elections in their constituencies will prolong the process of filling these vacant seats, further shaping the political dynamics in the region.
