Centre Revokes Detention of Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk After Six Months.

New Delhi:

In a significant move, the Centre has revoked the detention of Ladakh-based education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect, nearly six months after his arrest on September 26, 2025.

The decision was announced through an official statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which stated that the move was aimed at fostering an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh.

“The Government remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh so as to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders,” the statement said. It further noted that after due consideration, the government had decided to revoke Wangchuk’s detention by exercising powers available under the National Security Act.

According to official sources, Wangchuk had already undergone nearly half of the detention period prescribed under the Act.

The Centre reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the people of Ladakh and expressed hope that issues concerning the region would be resolved through dialogue and engagement with various stakeholders. The government also pointed out that discussions could take place through the mechanism of a high-powered committee as well as other appropriate platforms.

Officials stated that the government has been actively engaging with community leaders and other stakeholders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people in the region.

Sources, however, indicated that the prevailing atmosphere of bandhs and protests in Ladakh had begun to affect normal life and the local economy. The situation, they said, had adversely impacted several sections of society, including students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators and tourists.

Sonam Wangchuk has been one of the prominent voices leading the agitation demanding stronger constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, including a Union Territory status with legislative authority. His detention had sparked debate and drew attention to the ongoing political and environmental concerns in the Himalayan region.

With the revocation of his detention, the government hopes the move will help create a more conducive atmosphere for dialogue and peaceful resolution of issues concerning the future governance and development of Ladakh.
