Shimla:

In a moment of immense pride for Himachal Pradesh, Gram Panchayat Shansha in Lahaul block has secured the first position at the national level under the “Socially Just and Socially Secure Panchayat” category of the prestigious Deen Dyal Upadhyay Panchayat Sustainable Development Award (DDUPSVP) 2025. The recognition comes under the aegis of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, further highlighting the Panchayat’s exemplary governance and inclusive development model.

The official announcement was made on March 30, 2026, through a communication issued by Dr. Vijay Kumar Behera, Economic Advisor (IES), confirming that Shansha Panchayat will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1 crore. The amount will be directly transferred to the Panchayat’s development fund, enabling further strengthening of grassroots initiatives.

This remarkable achievement has been realized under the visionary leadership of Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana, whose administrative foresight and commitment to inclusive governance have played a crucial role in elevating the district’s national standing. The Panchayat stood out among 27 shortlisted entries from across the country and earned a place among the top three nationally in its category, ultimately securing the top rank.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner described the recognition as a “matter of great pride” for the entire district. She emphasized the importance of ensuring equitable access to government welfare schemes across all sections of society. She also directed all development blocks to adopt best practices such as digital accounting systems, Aadhaar-based beneficiary verification, and strengthening Gram Sabha-led decision-making processes to enhance transparency and accountability.

The success story of Shansha Panchayat is largely attributed to the tireless efforts, integrity, and visionary leadership of Panchayat Pradhan Prashant Sharma. His commitment to grassroots development, coupled with a transparent and participatory approach, has transformed the Panchayat into a model of social justice and security. By prioritizing inclusive welfare, community participation, and efficient governance, he has demonstrated that even a small Panchayat can achieve national excellence with the right intent and dedication.

The award is also a testament to the collective efforts of the Panchayat team, local administration, and the residents of Shansha, whose awareness, cooperation, and active participation have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. The Panchayat’s initiatives have ensured that benefits of government schemes reach every eligible individual, particularly the marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.

Adding to the chorus of appreciation, local MLA Anuradha Rana congratulated the Panchayat and its residents for this outstanding accomplishment. She lauded the efforts of the Panchayat representatives, officials, and staff members, stating that their dedication has brought laurels to the entire Lahaul-Spiti district.

Expressing gratitude, Pradhan Prashant Sharma credited the success to the unwavering support of the Panchayat residents, district administration, and MLA Anuradha Rana. He acknowledged that guidance and encouragement from experienced mentors including his brother in law Subhash Thakur, Editor Amar Jwala, played a vital role in his journey, helping him transition from limited political exposure to effective grassroots leadership.

“This achievement belongs to every resident of Shansha Panchayat,” he said, adding that honest intent, teamwork, and dedication to public service were the key driving forces behind this success.

The recognition of Shansha Panchayat is expected to serve as an inspiration for other Panchayats across the country. It reinforces the idea that strong leadership, community participation, and transparent governance can collectively drive sustainable and inclusive rural development.

As India continues to strengthen its grassroots democratic institutions, such achievements underline the transformative potential of Panchayati Raj in building equitable and resilient communities.
