India and New Zealand Ink Landmark FTA: A Global Leap for Ayush and Wellness Professionals.

New Delhi:

In a historic move for traditional medicine, India and New Zealand have officially concluded a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that places India’s Ayush systems at the forefront of international trade and healthcare cooperation.

Signed on April 30, 2026, by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay, the pact marks the first time a dedicated Health and Traditional Medicine Annexe has been included in such an agreement.

A New Era for Traditional Medicine

The agreement serves as a formal bridge between India’s ancient wellness systems—Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy—and New Zealand’s modern healthcare landscape, including its indigenous Māori health practices.

Key Pillars of the Agreement:

Market Access: Indian wellness institutions and service providers gain unprecedented entry into the New Zealand market.

Institutional Collaboration: The FTA paves the way for joint research, standardized training, and the integration of traditional medicine into contemporary healthcare models.

Medical Value Travel: Enhanced cooperation is expected to drive a surge in wellness tourism between the two nations.

Mobility Pathways: Visas for Wellness Experts. One of the most significant breakthroughs for the Indian workforce is the establishment of a dedicated visa quota. This provision is designed to facilitate the movement of skilled professionals, ensuring that India’s traditional knowledge is backed by professional mobility.

Professional Category, Benefit Under FTA
Ayush Practitioners, Structured pathways for long-term practice in New Zealand.

Yoga Instructors: Access to extended work permits and professional placement.

Cultural Professionals: New avenues for employment rooted in traditional knowledge.

Strengthening Global Standards
Beyond trade, the FTA institutionalise technical cooperation. This involves setting international benchmarks for education, training, and the development of quality standards for traditional medicines.

By embedding Ayush into a modern trade framework, the agreement transitions these systems from national heritage to global mainstream healthcare. It reflects a shared vision of sustainable, people-centric health practices that prioritize preventive and promotive care.

This agreement reinforces India’s vision of positioning Ayush as a pillar of global wellness. It’s not just about trade; it’s about taking India’s holistic health wisdom to the world stage.

Impact on the Global Ecosystem.

The India-New Zealand FTA is expected to serve as a blueprint for future trade deals, demonstrating how traditional knowledge can be successfully integrated into 21st-century economic partnerships. For India, it solidifies its status as a premier global supplier of skilled wellness professionals and high-quality traditional healthcare solutions.
