Army Hospital (R&R) Gets Advanced Radiotherapy Technology to Boost Cancer Treatment Facilities.

New Delhi:

In a major step towards strengthening cancer care services for armed forces personnel and their families, the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in Delhi has commissioned a state-of-the-art Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator in its Department of Radiation Oncology. The advanced medical equipment was formally inaugurated in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Sunday.

The newly installed Linear Accelerator is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capability to provide advanced and precise cancer treatment to serving soldiers, veterans, and their dependents. Officials stated that the facility would help meet the growing demand for radiotherapy services and improve in-house treatment capacity at one of the country’s premier military hospitals.

The advanced radiotherapy system is equipped to deliver several modern cancer treatment techniques, including Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). These technologies allow highly targeted radiation delivery to cancerous tissues while minimising exposure to nearby healthy organs and tissues.

Medical experts noted that precision-based radiotherapy plays a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes, reducing side effects, and shortening recovery time for cancer patients. The installation of the new machine marks a substantial technological upgrade from the hospital’s earlier radiotherapy equipment, which has now been decommissioned.

Officials from the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) described the induction of the new Linear Accelerator as an important milestone in the modernisation of oncology services across military healthcare institutions. They said similar upgrades are also being planned in a phased manner at other oncology centres functioning under AFMS.

Speaking on the occasion, senior officials highlighted the armed forces’ commitment to providing world-class healthcare facilities to military personnel and their families. The addition of advanced cancer treatment technology is expected to reduce dependency on external institutions and ensure timely treatment for patients within the military healthcare system.

Among those present during the commissioning ceremony were Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R) Lieutenant General Avinash Das, along with several senior defence and medical officials.

The development is being seen as a significant boost to specialised healthcare infrastructure within the armed forces and reflects ongoing efforts to modernise medical services through advanced technology and improved patient care systems.
