UNICEF Calls for Investigation After Explosion Injures 42 Children at Kabul School

New York/Kabul:

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed deep concern after an explosion at a school in Shahrak-e-Mahdia in Kabul injured 42 children aged between 9 and 14, calling for urgent measures to protect children and ensure the safety of educational institutions.

In a statement issued on August 19, UNICEF said it was “deeply distressed” by the injuries suffered by the children. The agency described the incident as a stark reminder of the continuing risks faced by children and the essential services they depend on.

UNICEF stressed that schools are protected under international law and must remain safe environments where children can study, grow and thrive without fear of violence or harm. The agency said attacks or incidents affecting educational facilities can have consequences far beyond the immediate physical injuries, potentially undermining children’s sense of security and access to education.

The United Nations has called for a thorough investigation into the explosion so that the circumstances surrounding the incident can be established and those responsible, if identified, can be held accountable. Reports indicate that the explosion occurred near a school complex in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi area, a predominantly Hazara neighbourhood.

UNICEF reiterated that the safety, dignity and rights of every child must be respected and protected at all times, regardless of circumstances.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of children and educational institutions in Afghanistan, where access to safe and uninterrupted education remains a major humanitarian concern.
