PM Keir Starmer Highlights Two Years of Labour Government, Says Reforms Are Delivering Tangible Results Across the UK.
London:
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has marked two years of the Labour government by highlighting what he described as significant achievements across the country, saying his administration has delivered “real change” by strengthening public services, improving living standards, boosting workers’ rights, and making communities safer.
In a statement reviewing the government’s progress, Starmer said the past two years have focused on putting more money into people’s pockets while ensuring that public services become more effective and accessible. He asserted that the government’s policies are beginning to produce measurable improvements in the daily lives of millions of people across the United Kingdom.
Among the key achievements outlined by the Prime Minister was the rollout of free breakfast clubs in more than 1,300 schools, aimed at supporting children’s education and reducing the financial burden on families. He also claimed that more than half a million children have been lifted out of poverty following the abolition of the two-child benefit limit.
Starmer further highlighted progress in housing, stating that the government has overseen the construction of the highest number of affordable homes in a decade. In the private rental sector, he said approximately 11 million renters now enjoy stronger protections through the abolition of Section 21 “no-fault” evictions and the end of rental bidding wars, measures intended to create a fairer housing market.
The Prime Minister also pointed to major reforms in employment law, describing them as the strongest expansion of workers’ rights in recent years. These include new day-one employment rights for working families, stronger statutory sick pay, enhanced maternity protections, and steps to eliminate exploitative zero-hours contracts.
On immigration and border security, Starmer said net migration has fallen by more than 80 per cent from its peak. He added that the number of people housed in asylum hotels has been reduced by 10,000, while arrests linked to people-smuggling networks have increased by 55 per cent as part of intensified enforcement efforts.
Addressing public safety, the Prime Minister said knife crime has declined by 10 per cent and homicide rates have fallen by 9 per cent. He also noted that more than 3,000 additional neighbourhood police officers have been recruited to strengthen community policing and improve public confidence in law enforcement.
Economic measures featured prominently in Starmer’s review, with the Prime Minister highlighting a record increase in the National Living Wage that has boosted earnings for millions of workers. He said the government remains committed to ensuring economic growth benefits working people across the country.
In the healthcare sector, Starmer said the National Health Service (NHS) has shown encouraging progress, with elective treatment waiting lists reduced by more than 400,000 patients. He also cited faster ambulance response times and improved public satisfaction with GP services as indicators of the government’s continued investment in healthcare.
On climate and energy, the Prime Minister said the UK has expanded its clean energy transition by approving more than 120,000 electric vehicle grants and delivering over one gigawatt of new clean energy capacity.
Concluding his statement, Starmer said his government remains focused on delivering long-term improvements in living standards, economic stability, public services, and national security, adding that the progress achieved over the past two years provides a strong foundation for continued reform across the United Kingdom.
