Bill Gates to Donate 99% of Fortune, Wind Down Foundation by 2045.
Washington DC:
Bill Gates has pledged to give away 99% of his estimated $108 billion fortune over the next two decades, with plans to close the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation by 2045.
In a blog post published Thursday, the Microsoft co-founder, 69, said he wants his legacy to reflect generosity, not wealth. “People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that ‘he died rich’ will not be one of them,” he wrote.
The foundation, which has already distributed $100 billion toward global health and development, plans to spend another $200 billion depending on market performance and inflation. Gates cited Andrew Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth, which argues that the rich have a duty to return their fortunes to society, quoting: “The man who dies thus rich dies disgraced.”
Gates outlined three key goals for the foundation: eliminating preventable diseases affecting mothers and children, eradicating diseases like malaria and measles, and lifting millions out of poverty.
He criticized recent foreign aid cuts by countries like the US, UK, and France, warning they jeopardize global progress. In an interview, Gates took aim at Elon Musk, blaming his influence in the Department of Government Efficiency for harmful budget cuts. “These cuts will kill not just children, but millions of children,” he said.
Despite controversy over the foundation’s influence, Gates remains committed to using his wealth to improve global health and equity, declaring: “In all of our work, the Gates Foundation will support efforts to help people and countries pull themselves out of poverty.”
