New Delhi:

India and Australia have unveiled an ambitious India-Australia Roadmap for Sports Collaboration, outlining a comprehensive framework to strengthen bilateral cooperation in sports through capacity building, sports science, major sporting events, industry partnerships, and women’s participation.

Announced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the roadmap builds on the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Sports and reflects the two countries’ shared commitment to expanding sporting ties and fostering long-term collaboration.

The roadmap comes at a significant time, with India preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, Australia set to host the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and India’s ambition to host a future edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Describing sports as a powerful bridge between the two nations, the roadmap identifies practical and future-focused areas of cooperation while recognising the important role of sporting bodies, universities, businesses, state governments, and community organisations in developing elite and grassroots sports.

Strengthening High-Performance Sports

One of the key pillars of the roadmap is capacity building. India and Australia will collaborate to share best practices in establishing and operating high-performance sports centres in India. Para sports have been identified as a priority area, with Australia expected to share expertise in athlete classification, coaching, and performance support.

The two countries will also promote two-way exchanges of coaches and coach educators through a “Train the Trainer” model, allowing Indian coaches to gain experience in Australia while Australian experts contribute to India’s coaching ecosystem.

A physical education exchange programme is also under consideration to encourage cooperation in school sports, sports science, and community participation.

Recognising yoga’s contribution to physical and mental well-being, both countries will explore opportunities to promote yoga and Yogasana through knowledge-sharing initiatives in Australia.

In addition, the Australian Sports Commission will support the development of select Indian coaches under the India-Australia High Performance Coach Development Programme, while talented young Indian athletes may benefit from scholarship-supported high-performance training opportunities at Australian universities and sporting institutions.

Expanding Sports Science and Research

The roadmap places significant emphasis on innovation and research. Universities from both countries will be encouraged to undertake joint projects in athlete performance analytics, injury prevention, sports nutrition, wearable technologies, recovery science, and Para sports.

Indian and Australian institutions will also collaborate on developing sports education curricula, while both nations will strengthen cooperation on anti-doping initiatives through engagement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and UNESCO’s International Convention against Doping in Sport.

Cooperation on Major Sporting Events

Recognising the importance of upcoming international competitions, India and Australia will exchange expertise in hosting major sporting events through partnerships with Australian states, territories, and national sporting organisations.

The roadmap also proposes hosting exhibition matches and youth competitions featuring sports popular in both countries, including Kabaddi and Kho Kho in Australia, and Australian Rules Football and basketball in India.

To support athletes preparing for major competitions, sporting bodies from both nations will work towards reciprocal arrangements involving shared facilities, competitions, and athlete support networks leading up to the Olympic, Paralympic, and Commonwealth Games.

Cricket also features prominently in the roadmap. Both governments welcomed the inaugural Big Bash League (BBL) match scheduled to be played in Chennai in December 2026 and encouraged Cricket Australia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to work towards hosting annual BBL matches in India.

Boosting Sports Industry and Investment

The roadmap seeks to deepen commercial engagement between the two countries by encouraging collaboration in sports equipment manufacturing, sports media, broadcasting, event management, and sports technology start-ups.

Building on the Australia-funded Sports Industry Summit scheduled in Mumbai in December 2026, both governments aim to facilitate business partnerships and improve market access for sports-related enterprises.

The roadmap also seeks to expand India’s exports of high-quality sports goods to Australia while increasing Australia’s export of expertise in coaching, strength and conditioning, athlete wellbeing, nutrition, sports psychology, and high-performance management.

Promoting Women in Sport

Women’s participation forms another important pillar of the partnership. India and Australia will jointly launch initiatives promoting women’s leadership, health, high-performance sport, and broader participation.

The roadmap envisages bilateral tournaments for women athletes while drawing upon successful Australian Sports Commission programmes to strengthen women’s empowerment, leadership, economic participation, and social inclusion through sport.

A Long-Term Strategic Partnership

The roadmap will be implemented through existing partnerships and flexible, demand-driven arrangements, ensuring projects are aligned with available resources and major event timelines. Both governments emphasised that cooperation will remain practical, sustainable, and focused on delivering measurable outcomes that benefit athletes, sporting institutions, and communities in both countries.

The India-Australia Roadmap for Sports Collaboration marks a significant step in expanding one of the fastest-growing pillars of the bilateral relationship, with both nations aiming to create lasting sporting, educational, and commercial partnerships in the years leading up to major global sporting events. If needed, this can also be adapted into a Reuters-style or AP-style news report.
