Israel Approves Plan to Establish Golda Meir Legacy Centre, Allocate Annual Funding for Commemoration.
Jerusalem:
The Israeli government has approved a proposal by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to advance legislation commemorating the legacy of Israel’s fourth Prime Minister, Golda Meir, including the establishment of a statutory corporation and dedicated annual funding to preserve her memory and promote research on leadership and nation-building.
The decision, approved by the government, supports draft legislation aimed at honouring Meir’s contribution to the State of Israel. Under the proposal, a statutory body will be created to oversee activities related to commemorating Golda Meir, researching women’s leadership, and studying statesmanship as a tool for national development and security.
As part of the initiative, the government will allocate NIS 7 million annually to the Prime Minister’s Office beginning in 2026. The funding will be used to implement the proposed legislation, establish a memorial site featuring a museum dedicated to Golda Meir, and support educational, research, cultural and public diplomacy programmes focusing on her life, leadership and legacy. The allocation will take effect once the bill is approved in its second and third readings in the Knesset.
Announcing the decision, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Golda Meir as one of the architects of modern Israel, saying she devoted her life to the Zionist vision and played a pivotal role during some of the country’s most challenging periods.
“The late Golda Meir dedicated her life to realizing the Zionist vision, accompanied the State of Israel from its very beginning, led it through times of trial, and acted with determination for its security, resilience and future,” Netanyahu said.
He added that commemorating her legacy is “a debt of gratitude to a woman who helped shape the character of the State of Israel.”
According to Netanyahu, the proposed centre will enable future generations to learn about Meir’s life and leadership while strengthening their understanding of an important chapter in Israel’s history.
The government said the initiative reflects Israel’s commitment to preserving the legacy of its national leaders and passing on the story of the country’s establishment to future generations. Officials added that the project is intended to promote the values of leadership, responsibility and Zionism, which they described as foundational to the State of Israel.
Golda Meir served as Israel’s Prime Minister from 1969 to 1974, becoming one of the first women in the world to lead a national government. She remains one of the country’s most influential political figures, particularly for her leadership during the 1973 Yom Kippur War and her role in shaping Israel’s early statehood and foreign policy.
