US Border Agents Seize Over $5 Million Worth of Methamphetamine Hidden in Watermelon Shipment.
Otay Mesa:
US Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a truck carrying more than $5 million worth of methamphetamine at the US-Mexico border in Otay Mesa. The drugs, wrapped in plastic painted in shades of green to mimic watermelons, were concealed among genuine fruit. The seizure included over two tonnes of methamphetamine distributed across 1,220 packages.
The truck, which appeared to be transporting a legitimate shipment of watermelons, was inspected after its paperwork raised suspicions. The discovery came just a week after nearly 300 kilograms of meth were found in a celery shipment at the same border crossing.
The driver of the truck has been handed over to Homeland Security officials. This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of drug smuggling operations, as Mexican cartels remain major suppliers of methamphetamine to the United States. In February, Mexican authorities uncovered a significant meth lab, seizing over 40 tonnes of the drug and revealing sophisticated production equipment including more than 200 centrifuges and boilers.
