ICG Intercepts Transnational Drug Syndicate, Seizes Narcotics Worth Over Rs. 3,000 Crore in Arabian Sea.
New Delhi:
In a major crackdown on maritime drug trafficking, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in coordination with the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Gujarat, has intercepted a suspected transnational narcotics smuggling operation in the Arabian Sea and seized high-grade narcotic substances valued at more than ₹3,000 crore.
The operation was conducted on September 25, 2026, in the Arabian Sea, west of Lakshadweep, following intelligence inputs regarding the movement of a suspected vessel carrying illegal narcotics.
According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), approximately 526 kg of narcotic substances, including heroin and methamphetamine, were seized during the operation. Five Pakistani nationals allegedly operating the vessel were also apprehended.
Intelligence-led maritime operation
Acting on specific intelligence, Indian Coast Guard assets launched extensive sea-and-air surveillance to locate and track the suspected vessel. The vessel was subsequently subjected to persistent monitoring before Coast Guard units initiated a coordinated hot pursuit.
The operation culminated in the interception and boarding of a suspicious Iranian dhow in the high seas. Coast Guard personnel secured the vessel and took control of the suspected contraband and its crew.
Vessel and suspects brought to Mumbai
Following the interception, the seized dhow, the apprehended crew members and the confiscated narcotic substances were escorted under armed security to Mumbai.
The suspects and seized material are now being subjected to joint interrogation and further investigation. The authorities are also undertaking comprehensive multi-agency legal proceedings to establish the wider network involved in the alleged transnational trafficking operation.
The seizure of 526 kg of narcotics represents a significant maritime interdiction and highlights the role of coordinated intelligence and surveillance in detecting illicit activity at sea.
Focus on curbing maritime narcotics trafficking
The Indian Coast Guard said the operation contributes to the national objective of “Nasha Mukt Bharat” and reinforces its efforts to prevent the use of India’s maritime domain for illegal activities.
The operation also underscores the Coast Guard’s stated commitment to combating maritime narcotics trafficking and maintaining vigilance against illicit activities in India’s maritime zones.
Further investigation is expected to establish the origin of the narcotics, their intended destination and the broader network allegedly connected with the smuggling attempt.
