Shimla:

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today announced that three Himachali players who were part of the Indian women’s kabaddi team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games will be awarded at least Rs. 1 crore each by the state government in recognition of their outstanding achievement.

The three players — Pushpa Rana, Jyoti Thakur and Bhawna Thakur — called on the Chief Minister here today. Congratulating them on their remarkable performance and contribution to Indian sports, Sukhu honoured the players by presenting them with traditional Himachali caps and shawls.

The Chief Minister said the state government would soon organise a special felicitation ceremony for the three sportspersons, during which they would also be presented with the announced prize money.

Sukhu further announced that the three players would be provided employment in government service. He said that those who did not wish to join the Police Department would instead be offered appointments in the Youth Services and Sports Department. This, he said, would enable them to continue their sporting careers while also contributing to the promotion and development of sports in Himachal Pradesh.

Highlighting the state government’s initiatives for sportspersons, the Chief Minister said that the government had made historic enhancements in prize money by revising its sports policy. He added that special emphasis was also being laid on strengthening sports infrastructure across Himachal Pradesh to provide better facilities and opportunities to emerging athletes.

The Chief Minister also announced a Rs. 1 crore award for Indian women’s cricket team player Renuka Thakur, recognising her achievements and contribution to Indian cricket.

The announcements are part of the state government’s efforts to recognise the achievements of Himachali sportspersons and encourage young athletes to pursue sporting careers at the national and international levels.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil and Principal Advisor (Media) to the Chief Minister Naresh Chauhan were also present on the occasion.
