Shimla:

Vallabh Government College, Mandi, celebrated National Unity Day with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The various activities organised to mark the occasion were presided over by the Principal of the college, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar.

The programme commenced with a solemn pledge to uphold and strengthen the spirit of national unity. Principal Dr. Sanjeev Kumar administered the National Unity Pledge to NCC Air Wing and Army Wing cadets, students, teaching faculty and non-teaching staff members. Everyone collectively pledged to preserve the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the nation and to place national interests above all personal considerations.

Addressing the NCC cadets, Flying Officer Dr. Chaman, Flight Commander, NCC Air Wing, Mandi, and Associate NCC Officer, urged them to embrace the ideals of “Nation First, Always First,” “Unity is Our Strength, Discipline is Our Identity,” and “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” in their lives.

Highlighting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s invaluable contribution to nation-building, Flying Officer Dr. Chaman stated that Sardar Patel was not merely the Iron Man of India but also one of the principal architects of modern, united India. Through the integration of princely states into the Indian Union after independence, he laid a strong foundation for the country’s political unity and territorial integrity.

He called upon NCC cadets to rise above caste, religion, language and regional differences and become committed guardians of national unity and integrity. He emphasised the importance of respecting India’s rich diversity and promoting peace, harmony, mutual understanding and brotherhood in society. He further observed that prioritising national interests over individual interests is the duty of every responsible citizen.

Elaborating on the life and achievements of Sardar Patel, Flying Officer Dr. Chaman described his personality as an outstanding embodiment of patriotism, determination, discipline, visionary leadership and selfless dedication. Referring to the historic Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928, he explained that Sardar Patel earned the distinguished title of ‘Sardar’ because of his exceptional leadership in championing the rights of farmers.

He further highlighted that one of the greatest challenges confronting India at the time of independence was the integration of princely states into the Indian Union. As the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India, Sardar Patel played a decisive role in integrating more than 562 princely states through his exceptional diplomatic acumen, political foresight and unwavering determination. He also made significant contributions towards strengthening India’s administrative framework and consolidating the All India Services.

Motivating the NCC cadets, Flying Officer Dr. Chaman stated that Sardar Patel’s life continues to inspire young people to embrace national unity, discipline, leadership, determination and the spirit of putting the nation first. He emphasised that the fundamental objective of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) is to develop disciplined, courageous, responsible and value-driven citizens. Every cadet, he added, should conduct themselves in such a manner that their character and actions become a source of inspiration for other young people in society.

He aptly remarked, “Unity is not merely an idea; it is the greatest strength of a nation. Similarly, discipline is not just an identity associated with the uniform; it is a reflection of the character of a responsible citizen.”

On the occasion, Lieutenant Dr. Balbir Singh also shared his views and highlighted the significance of national unity, social harmony and the pivotal role of young people in nation-building.

Assistant Professor Yograj, who was a member of the jury for the poster-making and speech competitions, also addressed the gathering. He elaborated on the life, personality and achievements of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Drawing a comparison between Sardar Patel and Otto von Bismarck, who played a significant role in the unification of Germany, he highlighted Patel’s exceptional leadership qualities and shared valuable insights into the historical significance of the Bardoli and Kheda Satyagrahas.
