New Delhi:

In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, Kiran Rao’s film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars. This satirical take on patriarchy triumphed over 29 competing films, including prominent titles like ‘Animal’ and Cannes winner ‘All We Imagine As Light’.

The film stars rising talent Pratibha Ranta, alongside veteran actors Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. Ranta, who plays the lead role of Jaya Singh, expressed her excitement about the Oscar selection, stating, “I couldn’t believe it,” as she reflected on the thrilling announcement.

‘Laapataa Ladies’ tells the story of two young brides who get lost on a train, delivering a powerful message that has resonated with audiences. Ranta remarked, “I’m so fortunate to be part of such a brilliant story,” emphasizing the film’s emotional impact.

At just 24, Ranta’s ascent in the film industry has been remarkable. Originally from Tikkar, Himachal Pradesh, she moved to Shimla for her education and later graduated in filmmaking from Mumbai. After making her debut in ‘Qurbaan Hua’, she gained widespread recognition with ‘Laapataa Ladies’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Heeramandi’.

Often compared to fellow Shimla native Preity Zinta, Ranta noted the irony of their shared background and expressed her ambition to carve her own path in the industry. With a growing fanbase of 1.2 million followers on Instagram, Ranta’s star is on the rise, and her journey is just beginning.
