Protests Erupt in Mandi Against Alleged Illegal Mosque Construction.

Shimla:

Hindu organizations staged a significant protest march today in Mandi town, voicing their opposition to the construction of what they claim is an illegal mosque. The demonstration, attended by local residents and several prominent saints, highlights growing tensions surrounding the alleged encroachment by the Waqf Board in the region.

A spokesperson for the protest underscored that there is rising unrest in Himachal Pradesh over reports of unauthorized mosques and shrines emerging across various areas. Local residents have expressed alarm over the increasing presence of illegal immigrants, particularly from Bangladesh and Myanmar’s Rohingya community, raising concerns about potential impacts on the demographic landscape and employment opportunities in the region.

“We are particularly worried about allegations of illicit activities associated with these illegal migrants, including claims of ‘love jihad,’ where they are accused of luring local women,” the spokesperson remarked. This has intensified community tensions and fueled demands for immediate government intervention.

Protesters are calling for the dissolution of the Waqf Board, advocating for stringent policies to combat illegal activities and preserve the region’s cultural and religious identity. They emphasize the need to protect the serene and sacred nature of Himachal Pradesh for future generations.

Following the march, the group submitted a memorandum of demands to the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, urging swift action from the state government to address their concerns. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how local authorities will respond to the community’s grievances and the broader implications for social harmony in the region.
