Mandi celebrated a significant milestone on Sunday, marking the 158th anniversary of its heritage buildings and institutions. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Mandi Chapter organized a special ceremony honoring the progressive vision of former ruler King Bijai Sen, whose birth anniversary coincided with the event.

Mayor Virender Bhatt presided over the ceremony, highlighting King Bijai Sen’s notable contributions, including the establishment of Bijai High School in 1866, the Victoria Bridge over the Beas River in 1877, and the Mandi Civil Hospital. His commitment to public welfare was a central theme of the celebration.

In recognition of his legacy, INTACH presented a trophy to King Bijai Sen, accepted by his descendant, Princess Siddheshwari, as her brother, King Umeshwar Singh, was unable to attend. Mayor Bhatt praised the former ruler’s focus on public welfare and announced a forthcoming meeting to discuss steps for heritage preservation.

Naresh Malhotra, INTACH Mandi Chapter coordinator, reaffirmed the chapter’s dedication to raising awareness about local heritage protection. Co-coordinator Anil Sharma noted the unique significance of honoring a former king through his descendants for the first time.

The event also included the presentation of a “Best Chapter” award from INTACH headquarters in Delhi, received by Malhotra and Sharma. The Old Students Association of Bijai High School was recognized for their efforts in preserving the school’s historic building.

The ceremony brought together dignitaries, retired officials, educational leaders, and community members, all united in celebrating Mandi’s rich cultural heritage and the lasting impact of King Bijai Sen.
