Lahauli Knitted Socks and Gloves to Feature in Berlin Exhibition, Boosting Global Recognition of Traditional Craft.
Shimla:
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has selected Lahauli Knitted Socks and Gloves for a prestigious five-day exhibition in Berlin, Germany. This exhibition, organized under the “Invest India” initiative, will be held from November 6 to 10, 2024, and showcases seven Geographical Indication (GI) Certified handicraft products from across the country, including this unique and ancient Himalayan craft.
The tireless efforts of the “Save Lahaul Spiti Society” and the guidance and active contribution of HIMCOSTE have led to the traditional Lahauli handicraft receiving Geographical Indication certification in 2019. Since then, both the Himachal Pradesh government and the Government of India have worked to promote this craft through numerous expos and exhibitions, gaining national recognition for both the product and its skilled artisans.
Lahauli socks, renowned for their vibrant geometric patterns and designs, have been woven and preserved by Lahauli women for centuries. This ancient craft has evolved through the incorporation of various knitting techniques and design influences from German Moravian missionaries who worked in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Despite its rich history, the Lahauli craft struggled for recognition in international markets due to a lack of proper branding. However, with the GI certification, it has finally received the recognition it deserves. The collaborative efforts of HIMCOSTE, Invest India, and the Save Lahaul Spiti Society have paved the way for this traditional craft to gain the global platform, reputation, and identity it truly deserves.
Expressing his gratitude, B.S. Rana, President of the Save Lahaul Spiti Society, thanked “Invest India” for the opportunity and congratulated the selected participant enterprise, “Garsha Looms,” owned by young entrepreneur Tanzin Bodh. B.S. Rana emphasized that this platform would provide immense benefits to Lahaul Spiti’s women artisans and help establish the global recognition of their tribal heritage.
