The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD), Dehradun, marked World Braille Day today in honor of Louis Braille’s 216th birth anniversary. The event, aimed at raising awareness about the significance of Braille and empowering visually impaired individuals, was a tribute to Braille’s vision of transforming darkness into light.

A key highlight of the celebration was the virtual release of the book ‘Standard Bharati Braille Codes’ by Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD). This comprehensive guide to standardized Braille unicodes in India is set to revolutionize accessibility for visually impaired individuals, offering a much-needed resource for Braille education and use.

The event was graced by NIEPVD Director, Er. Manish Verma, along with other esteemed dignitaries, including Manmeet Kaur Nanda, Joint Secretary of DEPwD, and Dipendra Manocha, President of Daisy Forum India.

In his address, Rajesh Aggarwal highlighted the transformative impact of Braille in promoting inclusivity and accessibility, stressing its essential role in empowering visually impaired individuals. NIEPVD Director, Er. Manish Verma, further emphasized the importance of Braille as a foundational tool for education, self-reliance, and overall empowerment for persons with visual disabilities.

The celebration of Louis Braille’s legacy served as a powerful reminder of the continuing need for accessible resources and education for visually impaired individuals, marking an important step towards an inclusive society.
