First Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Reported in India; Health Authorities on Alert.
New Delhi:
Three infants in Karnataka and Gujarat tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Monday, marking the first reported cases of the virus in India. The Union Health Ministry quickly addressed concerns, reassuring the public that the country’s health infrastructure is fully prepared to manage any rise in respiratory infections linked to the virus.
HMPV is a globally recognized respiratory pathogen known to cause infections in people of all age groups, with symptoms similar to those of other respiratory viruses like the flu or common cold. While the virus has recently garnered global attention following an outbreak in China, health experts have noted that the current situation does not pose an immediate cause for alarm in India.
The Karnataka and Gujarat state governments have confirmed the cases but assured residents that local health authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Additionally, the state administrations of Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra emphasized that the virus does not present an extraordinary threat at this time.
In response to the emerging cases, the Delhi government has taken precautionary measures by instructing all hospitals in the national capital to remain fully prepared to manage a potential surge in respiratory illnesses. The Ministry of Health also stated that it is actively coordinating with state governments and medical professionals to ensure timely detection and management of any future cases.
While the Union Health Ministry has affirmed that India’s healthcare system is equipped to handle an increase in respiratory infections, experts are urging people to practice general hygiene measures, including frequent hand washing and wearing masks when necessary, to reduce the spread of all respiratory viruses, including HMPV.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
