Himachal Pradesh Sees Significant Reduction in Road Accidents and Fatalities in 2024.

Shimla:

Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a significant decline in road accidents and fatalities in 2024, owing to the focused efforts of the State government in promoting road safety and traffic management. In comparison to 2023, road accidents in the state decreased by 6.48%, with 2,107 accidents reported in 2024, down from 2,253 the previous year. Fatalities also saw a notable reduction, with 806 lives lost in 2024, compared to 892 in 2023. Additionally, the number of injuries dropped from 3,449 in 2023 to 3,290 in 2024.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu praised the collective efforts of the government, law enforcement agencies, and citizens for this achievement. “The decline in road accidents and fatalities is a testament to the collective efforts of the Government, the law enforcement agencies, and awakened citizens. Over the past two years, the State Government has undertaken several initiatives to save valuable lives,” he said.

The state’s government has launched targeted awareness campaigns to promote responsible driving behavior, improved road infrastructure, and implemented safety measures at accident-prone areas. Traffic regulations have been enforced more stringently, and the emergency response system has been strengthened to ensure timely medical assistance to accident victims.

This achievement stands out even more when compared to the national situation. In 2023, India saw a rise in road accidents and fatalities, with nearly 1.73 lakh deaths and around 4.63 lakh injuries, marking record highs. The national statistics for road accidents in 2024 are yet to be released but are expected soon.

While the decline in road accidents is commendable, CM Sukhu emphasized that even one life lost on the roads is too many. “We will continue to prioritize road safety and implement innovative measures to further reduce accidents in the coming years,” he assured.

The Chief Minister also appealed to the people of Himachal Pradesh to cooperate with law enforcement by adhering to traffic rules, avoiding over-speeding, and practicing safe driving. He stressed that public participation is key to achieving safer roads, and the government remains committed to safeguarding human lives while continuously working to improve road safety across the state.
