New Delhi:

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, has set an ambitious target of achieving $100 billion in combined exports from the Food & Beverage (F&B), agriculture, and marine industries over the next five years. Addressing stakeholders from the F&B industry at the 8th edition of Indusfood 2025 in New Delhi, Shri Goyal emphasized that the target is achievable with a growth rate of 14-15% annually in these sectors.

The Minister expressed his satisfaction with the success of Indusfood 2025, highlighting the vital role played by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in the event’s organization. He also acknowledged their significant contribution in helping India reach $50 billion in exports last year.

Goyal outlined that the Government has already taken steps to facilitate growth in the F&B sector, including allowing 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the industry. He added that foreign ownership and management are welcome, and the government has streamlined processes for issuing work permits to individuals wishing to establish businesses or work in India.

Emphasizing the importance of innovation and quality, the Minister urged Indian companies to invest in research and development to create high-value, nutritious products. He encouraged industry stakeholders to focus on packaging improvements, sustainability, and mechanization to ensure hygienic processes. He also highlighted that such innovations could contribute to strengthening India’s food security, with potential for inclusion in government food programs.

Goyal further noted that the Indian government is prioritizing sustainability in the food industry. The government is promoting organic farming and easing certification processes for organic products while maintaining rigorous standards for traceability. He stressed the potential for growth in the organic sector and encouraged companies to invest in sustainable practices.

In terms of infrastructure, the Minister revealed that the government is looking to expand food testing laboratories across the country. He invited suggestions from the industry on the necessary equipment and processes required to establish high-quality testing facilities.

The Union Minister also encouraged Indian companies to explore the diverse tastes and flavors across the country to inspire innovation in the F&B sector. He highlighted the growing global demand for Indian pre-packaged, ready-to-eat foods, including products such as millets, pickles, and spices, and emphasized the opportunity to expand Indian exports globally.

Indusfood, launched by the Trade Promotion Council of India in 2017, serves as a key platform for Indian F&B companies to connect with international importers, distributors, and retail chains, facilitating the growth of India’s exports in the sector. The event continues to offer valuable networking and business expansion opportunities for both Indian and international stakeholders.

The Minister’s address reflected India’s growing ambition to establish itself as a global leader in the food and beverage, agriculture, and marine export sectors, driven by innovation, quality, and sustainability.
