Rajesh Kapoor, President of the Panna Lal Raksha Memorial Trust, has raised a crucial issue concerning the lack of proper cremation grounds (Shmashan Ghats) in the Kotli Tungal and Sadar areas of Mandi district. Kapoor highlighted the challenges faced by locals, especially in rural areas, where families often have to travel long distances for the last rites of their loved ones.

Despite the importance of these spaces for the cultural and spiritual wellbeing of the community, many villages in the region lack proper cremation grounds. Even where such facilities exist, they are often inaccessible, especially during the monsoon season, due to the absence of paved roads. Additionally, basic amenities like water, lighting, seating arrangements, and shade are either insufficient or non-existent.

Kapoor stressed that a cremation ground is not just a physical space but a sacred place for offering prayers and paying final respects. Without proper facilities, families are left to face unnecessary hardships at a time of immense emotional distress. He emphasized that this is not just a matter of infrastructure but a question of dignity and respect for the departed.

To address this issue, Kapoor has called for the construction of cremation grounds in every village, the development of paved roads to these sites, and the provision of basic facilities. He urged local administrations and elected representatives to prioritize this issue, urging communal participation to raise awareness and demand action.

Kapoor concluded by saying, “Respectful farewells are the foundation of a strong society.” He appealed to the community to unite and ensure that no family in the region should face such difficulties during their most challenging times.

This issue, Kapoor pointed out, is a matter of societal responsibility that must be addressed promptly.
