Delhi:

On the auspicious day of Holi festival on 25 March 2024, when the country was celebrating the festival of colours, the brave personnel of Border Roads Organisation connected the strategic road that will provide the shortest and all weather axis to Ladakh from Himachal side at Darcha in Lahaul and Spiti district. The road in conjunction with Shinkun La tunnel will provide seamless movement to Leh.

It will be an another road to provide access to indian military to Ladakh from Himachal side. Currently, there is only one road Manali-Leh highway from Himachal side to Leh, which crosses through high mountain passes like Baralacha pass,  Nakee la, Lachung la, and Tanglang la.

This axis will provide better connectivity to the people of Zanskar and bolster the defence preparedness along the Northern Borders.

The axis recently opened the strategic Darcha-Padum-Nimmu road in Ladakh, linking Manali to Leh via Darcha and Nimmu on Kargil – Leh Highway. This 298-km road, with just one pass, Shinkun La, ensures all-weather connectivity.

DG Lt. General Raghu Srinivasan mentioned swift mobilization of resources despite harsh winter conditions. The road enhances defense readiness and spurs economic growth in Zanskar valley. Construction of Shinkun La tunnel is underway for year-round accessibility.

This road is shielded from both the India-China border and the frontier with Pakistan, unlike the other two axes. Alternate axes are significant in also dealing with Pakistan’s second front in Siachen and from Pak Occupied Jammu Kumar.
