Prime Minister Narendra Modi today received Wang Yi, Member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and the country’s Foreign Minister, during the latter’s official visit to India. The meeting marked a renewed push towards strengthening India-China relations amid continuing regional and global geopolitical shifts.

During the meeting, Wang Yi handed over a personal message and formal invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping for Prime Minister Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled to be held in Tianjin. Prime Minister Modi graciously accepted the invitation and conveyed his support for China’s presidency of the SCO.

Border Stability Key to Bilateral Relations: PM Modi

Reaffirming India’s stance on the importance of peaceful borders, Prime Minister Modi emphasised that peace and tranquillity along the India-China border remain essential prerequisites for the overall development of bilateral ties. He reiterated India’s commitment to finding a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution to the longstanding boundary issues.

Positive Momentum Since Kazan Meeting

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the “steady and positive progress” in bilateral relations since his meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year. He highlighted that this progress was rooted in mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity. Notably, he acknowledged the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, a move seen as a positive sign of growing trust and people-to-people engagement between the two nations.

Regional and Global Significance of India-China Ties

In a broader diplomatic context, Prime Minister Modi stressed that stable, predictable, and constructive relations between India and China are not only beneficial for the two countries but also critical for regional and global peace and prosperity.

Wang Yi, for his part, shared a positive assessment of his earlier meetings with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Shri Ajit Doval, with whom he co-chaired the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives on the Boundary Question.

Looking Ahead to SCO Summit in Tianjin

With Prime Minister Modi’s acceptance of President Xi’s invitation, both sides now look forward to the SCO Summit in Tianjin, which will serve as a platform to deepen regional cooperation and potentially advance efforts to stabilise India-China relations.

This high-level engagement reflects a shared interest in resetting diplomatic channels, even as core issues like the border dispute remain under negotiation.
