China Slams US Tariffs on India Amid Warming Sino-India Ties.

New Delhi:

China has strongly criticized the United States for its imposition of steep tariffs on Indian goods, with Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, denouncing the move as a disruption to the global economic order. The remarks come at a time when India and China are making notable efforts to improve bilateral relations.

Speaking at a public event in New Delhi on Thursday, Ambassador Xu expressed China’s “full opposition” to the United States’ decision to impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on Indian products. He also warned against Washington’s threats of further tariff hikes, calling them a form of economic coercion that threatens international trade norms.

“Tariff and trade wars launched unilaterally are undermining the foundations of global economic and trade systems,” Xu said, referring to the broader pattern of protectionist measures initiated by the US in recent years.

The envoy’s comments hold diplomatic weight as they come just days after a significant development in Sino-Indian ties. On Tuesday, India and China jointly announced a series of confidence-building measures aimed at fostering a “stable, cooperative, and forward-looking” relationship. Key agreements included maintaining peace along the disputed border, promoting bilateral investment, reopening traditional border trade routes, and working towards the early resumption of direct flight connectivity.

The announcements are being viewed as a significant step towards normalizing ties between the two Asian giants, which had been strained in recent years due to military tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Xu’s remarks also gain relevance in the backdrop of increasing friction between India and the United States. The Trump administration’s trade policies have drawn criticism not only from China but also from India, with Indian officials expressing frustration over what they see as punitive and protectionist moves by Washington.

Analysts suggest that China’s show of support for India on the trade front could be an attempt to drive a wedge between New Delhi and Washington, as Beijing seeks to strengthen its regional partnerships amid its own escalating trade tensions with the US.

The developing alignment between India and China on economic cooperation could mark a turning point in regional diplomacy, even as both countries remain cautious due to lingering mistrust and unresolved border issues.

For now, China’s vocal backing of India against US trade policies may signal a shared interest in resisting American trade unilateralism — potentially reshaping the dynamics of global economic alliances.
