Shimla:

The massive rescue operation to evacuate stranded pilgrims in Bharmour, Himachal Pradesh, concluded successfully on Saturday, following a significant improvement in weather conditions. A total of 64 individuals undertaking the sacred Manimahesh Yatra were airlifted from Bharmour to Chamba in four sorties conducted by the Indian Air Force’s MI-17 helicopter.

The Chamba district administration coordinated the complex operation, ensuring the safe evacuation of pilgrims trapped due to inclement weather earlier in the week. With Saturday’s sorties, the total number of people rescued over the past two days rose to 588.

All rescued individuals were transported to their respective destinations in Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses, with the state government providing the service free of cost. In addition, two mortal remains were also brought down from Bharmour to Chamba during the operation.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu commended the tireless efforts of the district administration, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Chamba Police, Home Guards, non-governmental organizations, and numerous volunteers. “Their round-the-clock commitment showcases the spirit of service and resilience in the face of adversity,” he said.

He also acknowledged the generosity of the local communities, stating, “The people of Chamba have truly lived up to the Indian ethos of Atithi Devo Bhava, organizing langars and offering aid to the stranded yatris both in Bharmour and along the route to Chamba.”

Particular praise was extended to Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, who personally led the rescue operation from the ground. The Minister reportedly trekked from Chamba to Bharmour on foot to oversee the efforts, ensuring that every individual was accounted for and safely evacuated. Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted this act as a testament to the state government’s humanitarian approach and unwavering commitment to public welfare.

With the operation now concluded, normalcy is gradually returning to the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and extend necessary support to those affected.
