Government Unveils Strict Selection Criteria for Asian Games 2026 and Other Major Sports Events.

New Delhi:

In a move aimed at ensuring excellence and transparency in international sports representation, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has issued comprehensive Selection Criteria for the participation of individuals and teams in the Asian Games 2026 and other major multi-sports events.

This policy framework is designed to ensure that only athletes and teams with a realistic chance of winning medals represent India at prestigious platforms such as the Asian Games, Para Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Indoor Games, Asian Beach Games, Youth Olympics, Asian Youth Games, and Commonwealth Youth Games. The criteria, however, do not apply to the Olympic Games and other events where participation is governed by qualification norms of respective international sports federations.

Key Highlights of the Selection Criteria

For Measurable Individual Sports

  • Athletes must have equaled or surpassed the 6th-place performance from the last Asian Games.
  • The performance must be achieved at a recognized international event held within 12 months preceding the upcoming Asian Games.
  • If the event was not part of the last Asian Games, Senior Asian Championships results within the same timeframe will be considered.

For Non-Measurable Individual Sports

  • Athletes must have:
    • Achieved a top 6 finish in the most recent Senior Asian Championships within 12 months, or;
    • Be ranked among the top 6 Asian athletes in the official international rankings.
  • In the absence of recent Asian Championships or regular rankings, athletes must prove top 6 performance among Asian competitors in an equivalent international event.

For Team Sports and Team Events

  • Teams must have:
    • Finished within the top 8 at the last Senior Asian Championships held within 12 months, or;
    • Be among the top 8 Asian teams in the latest international rankings.
  • If neither exists, then a top 8 finish among Asian nations in a comparable international competition will be required.

Oversight, Accountability, and Exceptions

To maintain integrity in the selection process:

  • The Ministry reserves the right to reject recommendations from National Sports Federations (NSFs) if participation is not aligned with India’s goal of sporting excellence.
  • Recommendations may also be rejected if Asian Championships are found to be irregular or strategically timed to manipulate athlete eligibility, especially where top-level competition is absent.
  • The criteria contain a relaxation clause permitting the Ministry to include athletes or teams under exceptional circumstances, based on expert advice or recommendations from the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Strict Control on Delegation Composition

  • Only those athletes, coaches, and support staff who are cleared at government cost will form part of the official Indian contingent.
  • No additional personnel will be allowed, even at no cost to the government, reinforcing a policy of focused and performance-driven representation.

A Step Towards Accountability and Sporting Excellence

This newly announced selection framework is part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to instill discipline, merit-based selection, and fiscal responsibility in Indian sports administration. By laying down objective benchmarks and instituting expert oversight, the policy aims to enhance India’s competitiveness on the international stage while minimizing participation purely for representation’s sake.

The Ministry reiterated that this selection criteria would serve as a living document and may evolve based on emerging sporting trends, performance data, and feedback from experts and stakeholders.
