Nagrota Bagwan:
In a major push to transform Himachal Pradesh into a digital and innovation-driven state, the government under the leadership of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has unveiled a series of groundbreaking initiatives. These include the introduction of degree courses in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Nagrota Bagwan, and the setting up of a Digital University focused on innovation, entrepreneurship, skill development, and vocational studies in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district.
The state government has reaffirmed its commitment to equipping the youth with future-ready skills, particularly in the domains of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science, and drone technology—fields that are rapidly redefining global employment and entrepreneurship landscapes.
“Our goal is to make Himachal an IT hub of the country. We are investing in youth and innovation to build a digitally empowered future,” said Chief Minister Sukhu.
AI and Emerging Tech Education on the Rise
The newly announced AI and Data Science degree program at Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Nagrota Bagwan marks a significant milestone for higher education in Himachal Pradesh. The course is expected to open up wide-ranging employment opportunities and foster entrepreneurial ventures among students.
Additionally, new technical courses have also been approved in other institutions, such as:
- Civil Engineering Degree at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Engineering and Technology, Pragatinagar, Shimla.
- Diploma in Computer Science & Engineering (AI & Machine Learning) at Government Polytechnic, Sundernagar, Mandi.
To ensure quality education, the state has committed to appointing the required faculty and staff across these institutions.
Digital University at Ghumarwin: A Hub for Innovation and Skills
In a move set to redefine higher education and vocational training in the state, the government has announced the establishment of a Digital University in Ghumarwin. Developed through a public-private partnership and self-financing model, this university will be dedicated to innovation, entrepreneurship, skill development, and vocational studies.
The university aims to become a center of excellence, nurturing entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking among the youth.
Boost for Drone Technology and Green Initiatives
In alignment with the ‘Green Himachal Vision’, the government is also rolling out initiatives involving drone technology, with applications in agriculture, healthcare, and disaster management. Drone taxi services are expected to be launched this financial year, which will be a game-changer for delivering agricultural produce and medical supplies to remote areas.
Drone stations will be established in Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra districts to modernize agriculture and horticulture practices. Already, 243 youth have been trained in drone operations through state-run ITIs during 2024–25.
Innovation Fund to Fuel Young Talent
To further strengthen the innovation ecosystem, the government is setting up a dedicated Innovation Fund of Rs. 2 crore. This fund will support young minds in turning innovative ideas into viable products and services, acting as a catalyst for home-grown startups.
Path to Prosperity and Digital Empowerment
The state’s comprehensive approach—ranging from formal education in AI to applied technologies like drones, and institutional support for innovation—is designed to not only provide job-ready skills but also foster a culture of entrepreneurship.
“These initiatives are laying a strong foundation for digital empowerment and will contribute to the economic prosperity of Himachal Pradesh,” said a government spokesperson.
As the state embraces a technology-forward future, these steps are expected to position Himachal Pradesh as a prominent player in India’s digital and innovation economy.
