Abhilashi University Launches Eco-Friendly Vermicompost Unit to Promote Sustainable Agriculture.
Shimla:
In a pioneering move towards environmental sustainability and organic farming, Abhilashi University has inaugurated a cutting-edge Vermicompost Unit on its campus. This initiative, led by students from the School of Agriculture and the School of Basic Sciences, is a testament to the university’s commitment to sustainable development and experiential learning.
The Vermicompost Unit was established under the expert guidance of Principal Investigator Dr. Ravinder (Department of Soil Science) and Co-Principal Investigator Dr. Aishwarya Sharma (Department of Zoology). Their interdisciplinary collaboration highlights the university’s holistic approach to solving environmental challenges while integrating academic knowledge with real-world application.
What is Vermicomposting?
Vermicomposting is a natural process that uses earthworms—commonly known as “farmers’ friends”—to convert organic waste into high-quality, nutrient-rich compost. This method not only helps reduce biodegradable waste but also produces an excellent organic fertilizer that improves soil health, structure, and fertility.
“Through vermicomposting, we’re not just managing waste—we’re creating value for our farms, our students, and our environment,” said Dr. Ravinder during the project presentation.
Project Objectives:
- Promote sustainable waste management by recycling organic materials
- Produce high-quality organic manure for eco-friendly farming
- Provide students with hands-on training in sustainable agricultural technologies
This initiative offers a practical learning platform for students, equipping them with essential skills in organic farming, waste management, and environmental stewardship—skills that are increasingly vital in the face of global climate challenges.
Leadership Support and Campus Visit
On September 29, 2025, the Vermicompost Unit was visited by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. H.K. Chaudhary, and Dean of Agriculture, Dr. P.C. Sharma, who personally congratulated the student team and faculty mentors for their hard work and innovation.
“Such green initiatives are essential not only for the environment but also for the academic and professional growth of our students. This is the kind of project that builds a future-ready university,” stated Prof. Chaudhary during his address.
They also encouraged further expansion of similar projects across departments and emphasized embedding sustainability into the university’s daily operations.
University Leadership Commended
The success of the Vermicompost Unit is rooted in the strong support from the university’s leadership. The university extends heartfelt gratitude to:
- Chancellor: Dr. R.K. Abhilashi
- Pro-Chancellor: Dr. L.K. Abhilashi
- Registrar: Dr. Kapil Kapoor
- Chairperson (GES): Dr. Narbada Abhilashi
- Vice-Chairperson (AES): Dr. Promila Abhilashi
- Secretary: Narender Kumar
Their unwavering encouragement and vision for a greener, more sustainable campus have been instrumental in turning this eco-friendly idea into a working, impactful project.
A Green Step Toward a Sustainable Future
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Abhilashi University’s journey toward sustainability. By transforming organic waste into valuable compost, the university is not only reducing its ecological footprint but also fostering a culture of environmental consciousness among students and staff.
With “nature’s recyclers” — the humble earthworms — at the heart of the operation, the Vermicompost Unit is a shining example of how science, education, and sustainability can work together to shape a better, greener future.
