IARC and ESMO Launch New Online Course to Strengthen Breast Cancer Early Detection Skills.

Lyon, France:

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in collaboration with the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), has launched a new online learning course titled “Using the IARC Atlas of Breast Cancer Early Detection”. The initiative, unveiled during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aims to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of healthcare professionals involved in the early detection of breast cancer.

The course is available on the World Health Organization (WHO) Academy online learning platform and is designed for a broad range of professionals, including primary health-care workers, community health educators, radiology and pathology specialists, and trainers working in breast cancer screening and diagnosis.

“This course is a valuable tool for healthcare providers who play a crucial role in identifying breast cancer at an early, more treatable stage,” said an IARC spokesperson. “By bringing together the latest scientific evidence and practical examples, it helps bridge the gap between research and practice.”

The one-hour, flexible, and interactive course offers a comprehensive overview of key sections from the IARC Atlas of Breast Cancer Early Detection, guiding learners through step-by-step approaches for evaluating breast abnormalities. Participants can explore how to integrate the Atlas into daily clinical and community health practice through case-based examples and self-paced learning modules.

The IARC Atlas itself is a rich educational and training resource that includes:

Detailed descriptions of clinical and diagnostic procedures

Step-by-step video tutorials

Illustrated case studies

Knowledge quizzes

Reporting templates and best-practice guidance

Through this course, IARC and ESMO aim to strengthen global capacity for early cancer detection, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where access to specialized training remains limited and where early detection can have the greatest impact on survival outcomes.

This initiative forms part of the IARC–ESMO Learning and Capacity-Building Initiative for Cancer Prevention, which seeks to raise awareness about emerging issues in cancer prevention and provide opportunities for researchers and health professionals to enhance their skills through multidisciplinary learning.

Healthcare professionals and educators are encouraged to enroll now and explore the many teaching and learning possibilities offered by this innovative digital training.
