Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most cherished and enduring stars, died in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness. The actor, whose health had been declining for months, had recently been discharged from a Mumbai hospital, with his family choosing to continue his care at home. Police confirmed the news of his passing, while the family has yet to release an official statement.

The legendary actor’s final rites were conducted at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Ville Parle, where a steady stream of celebrities and close friends arrived to pay their last respects. Among those present were Hema Malini, Esha Deol, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Salim Khan, underscoring the profound impact Dharmendra had on generations of film personalities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led national tributes, calling Dharmendra’s death “the end of an era”. In a heartfelt post on X, he hailed the actor’s remarkable range and on-screen presence, noting how his roles resonated deeply with millions. Modi also praised Dharmendra’s warmth and humility—qualities that endeared him to colleagues and fans alike.

Film personalities from across the industry expressed shock and sorrow. Karan Johar remembered him as “a massive megastar” and “a bonafide legend”, while Kajol described him as one of the “good men” the world could ill afford to lose. Many others, from Ajay Devgn to Kareena Kapoor, shared memories and tributes on social media.

Born Dharam Singh Deol in 1935 in Punjab, Dharmendra built one of Bollywood’s most remarkable careers, spanning over 300 films in 65 years. From the intensity of Satyakam to the iconic charm of Sholay and the comedic brilliance of Chupke Chupke, he remained a rare actor who excelled across genres—action, romance and comedy.

Dharmendra is survived by his first wife Prakash Kaur, his second wife Hema Malini, sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, and daughters Vijeta, Ajeeta, Esha and Ahana. His death leaves an irreplaceable void in Indian cinema, closing the curtain on a life that shaped and transformed Bollywood’s golden eras.
