PM Keir Starmer Emphasizes Purposeful Internationalism at Lady Mayor’s Banquet.
London:
Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered a keynote speech on foreign policy at the Lady Mayor’s Banquet at the Guildhall, London yesterday, outlining his government’s vision of “purposeful internationalism” aimed at strengthening Britain’s economic and security interests abroad.
Addressing business leaders and dignitaries, Starmer emphasized the importance of predictability and clarity for British businesses operating internationally. “That is what we are delivering – a clear approach for business,” he stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to balancing security concerns with economic opportunities.
On critical issues such as defence, artificial intelligence, and national infrastructure, Starmer made clear that the UK will always prioritize national security and economic interests. However, he underscored a more open approach to markets where risks are manageable, particularly in trade with China. “Instead of assuming you shouldn’t do business with China because it’s too difficult… we are going to give businesses the confidence, clarity, and support that they need to win these opportunities,” he said.
The Prime Minister cited ongoing government efforts to strengthen international trade, including visits to China by the Chancellor and Trade Secretary, and current engagements by the Investment Minister. He stressed that these initiatives are already delivering substantial economic benefits, including billions in export wins across sectors such as financial and professional services, creative industries, pharmaceuticals, and luxury goods.
Starmer illustrated the impact of foreign policy on everyday lives through examples of British workers benefiting from international deals. He recalled his visit to Jaguar Land Rover in Solihull, where a tariff deal with the United States secured jobs for factory workers and their communities. He also highlighted a visit to the BAE Systems plant in Warton, Lancashire, where a Typhoon contract protected jobs for apprentices and long-serving employees alike.
“My politics is about going out there, fighting for the British people,” Starmer said. He urged that in today’s volatile global environment, Britain should engage with purpose and pride rather than shrink from the world stage. “Internationalism is patriotism,” he concluded, affirming that strong global engagement is essential to safeguarding national interests while delivering tangible benefits to citizens at home.
The speech underlined the UK government’s strategy of combining pro-business policies with robust foreign policy, emphasizing both economic growth and national security in a rapidly changing world.
