The Artemis Accords, established in 2020 by the United States and seven other nations, outline a set of practical principles to guide sustainable civil space activities, including cooperation, transparency, and the responsible use of space resources. The Accords serve as a framework for ensuring that space exploration is conducted peacefully, safely, and in a manner that benefits humanity.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó signed the Accords on October 22, on the sidelines of a bilateral meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Malaysia followed suit when Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamad bin Hasan signed the Accords on October 26 during the ASEAN Leaders’ Meetings in Kuala Lumpur. The Philippines became the third new signatory, with Officer-in-Charge of the Philippines Space Agency Gay Perez signing the Accords on October 27 in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of U.S. Under Secretaries Jacob Helberg (Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment) and Allison Hooker (Political Affairs).

The United States, through the Department of State and NASA, leads outreach and implementation efforts for the Artemis Accords. The addition of Hungary, Malaysia, and the Philippines highlights the growing global commitment to collaborative space exploration and adherence to principles that ensure the safety, sustainability, and peaceful use of outer space.

The Accords continue to serve as a cornerstone for international partnerships in space, promoting responsible exploration while fostering scientific cooperation and innovation.
