Congress Protests Changes in MGNREGA, Warns of Employment Crisis in Rural Areas.
Shimla:
The Congress party has intensified its protest against the renaming of MGNREGA and changes in its working system, alleging that the new process has created a direct threat to rural employment. The protest was held on Friday at Kardang Panchayat of Lahaul and Spiti district under the banner of “MNREGA Bachao Sangram.”
Addressing villagers, District Congress President of Lahaul and Spiti, Dorje Angroop, popularly known as Dorje Larje, said that the recent changes introduced by the central government have made the scheme excessively complex, causing serious difficulties for poor and labor-class families. He stated that instead of strengthening employment opportunities, the revised procedures are discouraging workers from accessing guaranteed work.
Dorje Larje said that MGNREGA is not an ordinary welfare scheme but the lifeline of rural India, providing crucial support to thousands of families. He alleged that the government’s decision reflects an anti-poor mindset and has been strongly opposed by villagers across the region.
He further asserted that the Congress party will continue its struggle to protect the rights of rural workers and will take this movement to every panchayat and village. The party, he said, is committed to safeguarding employment and ensuring that the voices of the rural poor are heard at all levels.
