Shimla/New Delhi:

Ex-servicemen across Himachal Pradesh have expressed immense pride and happiness over the promotion of Param Vir Chakra (PVC) awardee Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar to the rank of Honorary Captain. Currently serving in the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK RIF) regiment of the Indian Army, Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar was conferred the honorary rank on the occasion of Republic Day at a ceremonial function held on Vijay Path in New Delhi.

Senior Army officials bestowed the honorary commission in recognition of his exemplary service, exceptional leadership, and extraordinary bravery. Hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Captain Sanjay Kumar’s journey in the Army is being widely described as an inspiration for serving soldiers, veterans, and the youth of the nation.

Reacting to the promotion, Captain Jagdish Verma (Retd), Chairman of the United Front of Ex-Servicemen (JCOs and OR), Himachal Pradesh—a joint organisation of retired personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force—said that the entire ex-servicemen community is overwhelmed and elated. In a press statement issued on the eve of the promotion, he said that Captain Sanjay Kumar’s elevation to the rank of Honorary Captain is a moment of great pride for the armed forces fraternity and the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Captain Verma highlighted that Sanjay Kumar was recruited as a Sepoy in the JAK Rifles and rose through the ranks by successfully qualifying all cadre promotions, eventually attaining the prestigious rank of Honorary Captain. He also recalled that Captain Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award, for displaying unparalleled courage during the 1999 Kargil conflict. He had shown exceptional bravery while evicting Pakistani intruders from Indian territory, an act that has since become a defining chapter in India’s military history.

“The valour, unwavering dedication, and selfless service of this brave Kargil hero continue to motivate not only soldiers in uniform but also the youth of the country,” Captain Verma said, adding that such recognitions reinforce faith in the Army’s traditions of honour and sacrifice.
