Kochi:

The Indian Navy successfully conducted the IONS Maritime Exercise (IMEX) Tabletop Exercise (TTX) 2026 at the Maritime Warfare Centre under the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, marking a significant step toward enhancing regional maritime security cooperation.

The high-level exercise brought together senior delegates from member nations of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), along with international officers from IOS SAGAR and personnel of the Indian Navy. The discussions focused on addressing emerging non-traditional maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.

Broad International Participation

The exercise saw active participation from navies of Bangladesh, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Timor-Leste. This wide representation highlighted the shared commitment among IONS member states to foster mutual trust and strengthen collaborative mechanisms for maritime security.

India Assumes Leadership Role

The event assumes added significance as India prepares to take over the chairmanship of IONS for the 2026–2028 cycle after a gap of 16 years. IMEX TTX 2026 serves as a key milestone in reinforcing India’s leadership role in promoting regional stability and cooperation in the Indian Ocean.

Focus on Non-Traditional Security Challenges

Conducted in a simulated environment, the tabletop exercise enabled participating nations to deliberate on complex maritime scenarios without the logistical constraints of live deployments. Key objectives of the exercise included:

Enhancing shared understanding of operational approaches and challenges

Strengthening coordination mechanisms such as information sharing and decision-making

Validating and refining maritime security guidelines under the IONS framework

The scenarios focused on non-traditional threats such as maritime crime, humanitarian crises, and regional contingencies that require coordinated multinational responses.

Strengthening Regional Maritime Framework

IMEX TTX 2026 provided a platform for professional exchange, allowing naval officers to explore innovative solutions and deepen cooperation. The exercise reaffirmed the importance of IONS as a collaborative forum for addressing maritime challenges through dialogue, shared responsibility, and region-specific strategies.

The insights gained from the exercise are expected to further strengthen the IONS framework, contributing to a more secure, stable, and responsive maritime environment in the Indian Ocean Region—an area vital to global trade, energy supply routes, and international connectivity.
