Modi, Trump Review Strategic Ties at G7 Summit, Push for Early India–US Trade Deal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met United States President Donald J. Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on June 17, 2026, where the two leaders reviewed the growing momentum in India–US relations and discussed key regional and global developments.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi praised President Trump for his efforts in facilitating an understanding aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in West Asia. He emphasized the importance of restoring peace and stability across the broader region and highlighted the need to safeguard freedom of navigation and uninterrupted commercial activities through the Strait of Hormuz. Modi also stressed ensuring the safety and security of seafarers operating in the strategically vital waterway.
The leaders assessed the progress achieved under the India–US COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology), launched following their meeting in Washington D.C. in February 2025. They welcomed significant advancements in cooperation across defence, strategic technologies, energy, and bilateral trade.
A major focus of the discussions was the ongoing negotiations for an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement between the two countries. Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the substantial progress made in the talks and directed officials to work towards concluding a balanced, mutually beneficial, and commercially meaningful agreement at the earliest.
In this context, it was announced that United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will visit India next week to advance discussions related to the proposed trade pact.
Prime Minister Modi and President Trump reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. They underscored the importance of expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including defence, technology, energy, trade, and regional security, for the mutual benefit of both nations and their people.
