U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau arrived in Panama City on June 22 to lead the United States delegation at the 56th Regular Session of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly, underscoring the administration’s commitment to strengthening partnerships across the Western Hemisphere.
During his two-day visit to Panama, Deputy Secretary Landau is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, senior government officials, and regional leaders. The discussions are expected to focus on advancing key U.S. priorities, including national sovereignty, border security, democratic governance, regional stability, and economic competitiveness.
According to the U.S. State Department, Landau will use the forum to encourage deeper cooperation among member states in addressing some of the hemisphere’s most pressing challenges. These include combating illegal immigration, disrupting transnational criminal networks, and strengthening collective responses to security threats affecting the region.
The Deputy Secretary is also expected to discuss ongoing crises in Haiti and Nicaragua, while advocating for democratic reforms and political stability throughout the Americas. U.S. officials say the administration remains committed to supporting a democratic transition in Venezuela and safeguarding democratic institutions in Bolivia.
Economic cooperation is another major theme of the visit.
