In a ceremony held today, Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, celebrated the achievements of the Indian para-athletics contingent upon their return from the Paris 2024 Paralympics. The event honored athletes, coaches, and support staff for their exceptional performances.

Dr. Mandaviya lauded the athletes for their inspiring feats and resilience, stating, “I am thrilled to meet the six debutant Paralympians today. Special congratulations to Deepthi on her medal in her first Paralympics. To all, I extend my best wishes for future events. Remember, participation and overcoming challenges are what truly define success. You inspire millions of young Indians.”

Among the athletes recognized was Deepthi Jeevanji, who earned a bronze in the Women’s 400m T20 category on her Paralympic debut. Also celebrated were debutants Ravi Rongali (Men’s Shotput F40), Rakshita Raju (Women’s 1500m T11), Kanchan Lakhani (Women’s Discus Throw F53), Sakshi Kasana (Women’s Discus Throw F55), and Manu (Men’s Shotput F37), alongside their coaches and support staff.

Deepthi, identified by SAI coach N Ramesh in Hyderabad, has rapidly ascended in the para-athletics world since 2019. As a Khelo India athlete and now a TOPS athlete, her accolades include gold medals at the Asian Para Games and the 2024 World Championships, where she set a new world record. She also secured two medals at the 2020 Khelo India Youth Games.

Reflecting on her success, Deepthi remarked, “Winning this bronze medal makes me proud. I aim to secure a gold next time.”

As of September 4, 2024, India has accumulated a total of 24 medals at the Paris Paralympics, including 5 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze.
