Mandi Literacy and Public Development Committee Honoured for Social Contributions on Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti’s 34th Foundation Day.

The Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti marked its 34th Foundation Day on Saturday at the Science Auditorium of Himachal Pradesh University Shimla, bringing together over 250 workers from across the state dedicated to social causes. The event was a significant occasion, celebrating the remarkable social contributions of the Mandi Literacy and Public Development Committee.
The committee was recognized for its outstanding work in raising awareness on issues such as literacy, health, sanitation, environmental conservation, and drug prevention. Founding members Kuldeep Guleria, Narpat Verma, and Joginder Walia were honored for their tireless efforts since the committee’s inception in 1992. Notably, the committee organized over 8,000 street plays in the traditional ‘Bantda’ style between 1992 and 1996 to educate villagers on various social issues, and played a key role in positioning Mandi District as a national leader in environmental awareness.
During the ceremony, senior members of the committee, particularly those over 80, received the Gyan Vigyan Award for their lifelong contributions to social development. The event also honored key figures such as Dr. Kuldeep Singh Tanwar, the founder president of the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti, and Dr. Kulvinder Singh, its founding secretary, along with Joginder Walia for their significant roles in the Samiti’s success.
The celebration was graced by Padma Shri awardees Dr. Omesh Bharti and Dr. Nek Ram Sharma, both of whom shared their insights with attendees. Dr. P.C. Negi, a special guest at the event, lauded the Samiti’s efforts and stressed the importance of focusing on health and environmental issues. Dr. Tanwar also highlighted the growing concern of drug addiction among youth, urging continued intervention from social organizations.
The event featured inspiring performances, including Gyan Vigyan songs by the Lok Sanskritik Manch of Himachal Pradesh University and artists from various districts, showcasing the state’s cultural heritage while promoting scientific thinking. The gathering, which included four generations of leaders, was a testament to the Samiti’s collective work culture and its enduring legacy in the promotion of scientific awareness and social development.
