India and Chile to Initiate Comprehensive Economic Partnership Talks, Eyeing Key Sectors like Minerals, Energy, Defence, and Space.

In a historic move to enhance bilateral relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the President of Chile, Mr. Gabriel Boric Font, in New Delhi today. The visit marks a significant milestone in the growing partnership between India and Chile, underscoring the importance of strengthening ties across multiple sectors.
During their meeting, the two leaders held comprehensive discussions on various areas of cooperation and agreed to begin talks on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This agreement aims to further expand economic linkages between the two nations, facilitating trade and investment opportunities.
Highlighting the potential for collaboration, Prime Minister Modi and President Boric identified several key sectors for deeper cooperation, including minerals, energy, defence, space, and agriculture. Both leaders expressed their commitment to working together on these critical areas, given their immense potential for mutual growth.
One notable area of focus was healthcare, with both leaders acknowledging the growing popularity of Yoga and Ayurveda in Chile as a sign of expanding cultural and people-to-people connections. They discussed how the healthcare sector could become a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship, with a focus on enhancing wellness and holistic healthcare practices.
Additionally, the leaders emphasized the importance of furthering cultural and educational exchanges, including student exchange programs, to deepen mutual understanding and foster long-term people-to-people ties.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi expressed his pleasure at hosting President Boric:
“India welcomes a special friend! It is a delight to host President Gabriel Boric Font in Delhi. Chile is an important friend of ours in Latin America. Our talks today will add significant impetus to the India-Chile bilateral friendship.”
The Prime Minister further elaborated on the key discussions: “We are keen to expand economic linkages with Chile. In this regard, President Gabriel Boric Font and I agreed that discussions should begin for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. We also discussed sectors like critical minerals, energy, defence, space and agriculture, where closer ties are achievable.”
“Healthcare in particular has great potential to bring India and Chile even closer. The rising popularity of Yoga and Ayurveda in Chile is gladdening. Equally crucial is the deepening of cultural linkages between our nations through cultural and student exchange programmes,” he added.
This visit is expected to set the stage for a new chapter in the India-Chile partnership, with both countries poised to deepen collaboration in vital sectors that will contribute to their shared future prosperity.
