Gangtok, Sikkim:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the grand ‘Sikkim@50’ programme via videoconferencing today, commemorating 50 years since Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union in 1975. Themed ‘Where Progress Meets Purpose, and Nature Nurtures Growth’, the event in Gangtok marked a significant milestone in the state’s democratic and developmental journey.

Due to inclement weather, the Prime Minister could not attend the celebrations in person but conveyed his heartfelt greetings to the people of Sikkim. He assured them of his intent to visit the state soon to personally witness their achievements and aspirations.

Honouring 50 Years of Statehood

In his address, PM Modi lauded the state’s remarkable progress over five decades, describing Sikkim as a model where development coexists harmoniously with nature. He declared, “Sikkim is the pride of the nation,” highlighting its transformation into a 100% organic state, its role as a biodiversity haven, and its growing economic strength—evident from its high per capita income.

Reflecting on the state’s integration into India, PM Modi remarked, “Fifty years ago, Sikkim not only connected with India’s geography but also with its soul.” He praised the diverse communities of the state for their collective contribution to its culture, prosperity, and development.

Unveiling New Projects and Vision for the Future

The Prime Minister unveiled and laid the foundation stones for multiple projects aimed at boosting healthcare, tourism, sports, and connectivity in Sikkim. These included:

  • A 500-bed hospital to ensure quality healthcare for all, especially underprivileged families.
  • Several ropeway projects to enhance accessibility in difficult terrain.
  • The Golden Jubilee Convention Centre to promote conference and cultural tourism.
  • A skywalk project and a statue of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, symbolizing Sikkim’s rising stature.
  • A modern sports complex in Gangtok, set to train the next generation of national athletes.

He also announced plans to further connect the region through infrastructure such as the Bagdogra-Gangtok Expressway, which will be integrated with the Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway, and the Sevoke-Rangpo rail line, which will connect Sikkim to the national railway grid.

Organic and Sustainable Development Initiatives

In a major development for sustainable agriculture, PM Modi announced the establishment of India’s first organic fisheries cluster in Soreng district. He stated this initiative would put Sikkim on the global map not just for organic farming but also for organic aquaculture, meeting the growing demand for sustainable food products.

PM Modi also highlighted the export of Sikkim’s Dalle Khursani chili for the first time in March 2025 as a symbol of the state’s growing agro-export potential.

Healthcare and Welfare Announcements

The Prime Minister emphasized his government’s commitment to affordable and inclusive healthcare. Over 25,000 people in Sikkim have received free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. He also announced that all senior citizens above 70 years of age are now eligible for Rs. 5 lakh free medical treatment annually.

Boosting Youth, Sports, and Tourism

Encouraging Sikkim’s youth to aim high, PM Modi called upon them to be global-ready by focusing on new-age skill development. He praised sporting legends from the state like Bhaichung Bhutia, Tarundeep Rai, and Jaslal Pradhan, and emphasized the government’s push under the Khelo India scheme to build infrastructure and nurture sports talent.

Tourism was another major focus area. He called for Sikkim’s evolution into a global tourism hub, highlighting opportunities in wellness, adventure, cultural, and conference tourism. PM Modi described Sikkim as offering a “complete tourism package” with its UNESCO-listed Kanchenjunga National Park, Buddhist monasteries, waterfalls, and rich spiritual heritage.

Vision 2047: Roadmap for Sikkim’s Future

Looking ahead, PM Modi urged the people and government of Sikkim to envision the state’s future by 2047, when India marks its centenary of independence and Sikkim celebrates 75 years of statehood.

He outlined an ambitious roadmap:

  • Make Sikkim a Green Model State recognized globally.
  • Ensure solar-powered electricity in every home.
  • Lead in organic food exports and agro-startups.
  • Develop into a digitally empowered state, embracing cashless transactions.
  • Promote waste-to-wealth initiatives to new heights.
  • Create local-global opportunities for the youth in high-demand sectors.

Standing United Against Terrorism

Towards the end of his address, PM Modi condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, terming it an attack on humanity and national unity. He highlighted India’s firm response, including Operation Sindoor, and the strategic dismantling of terrorist bases and airfields, reiterating India’s resolve to combat terrorism decisively.

Leaders Present

The event was graced by Governor of Sikkim Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and other dignitaries. PM Modi commended the Sikkim government’s efforts in organizing the grand golden jubilee celebrations.
