CTU Launches Chandigarh–Sarkaghat Bus Service, Fulfilling Long-Standing Demand of Ex-Servicemen and Locals.

Shimla:

In a landmark development set to enhance regional connectivity and ease travel for thousands, the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has commenced a direct bus service on the Chandigarh–Sarkaghat–Chandigarh route, effective 1st September 2025. The initiative brings long-awaited relief to ex-servicemen and civilians residing in Sarkaghat region of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh.

The new service is being hailed as a “game-changer” by both veterans and the general public, many of whom routinely commute to Chandigarh for essential services such as healthcare, education, administrative work, and legal matters.

Ex-Servicemen’s Efforts Pay Off

The United Front of Ex-Servicemen (JCOs & OR), Himachal Pradesh Branch, Sarkaghat, played a pivotal role in making this service a reality. Under the leadership of Capt. Jagdish Verma (Retd), the organization submitted a formal representation in 2024 to CTU, outlining the urgent need for dependable public transport connecting Sarkaghat with Chandigarh and the Tricity area.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Capt. Verma extended heartfelt thanks to the Director of CTU and its staff for their positive response and timely implementation. He emphasized that ex-servicemen and their families often need to travel to Chandigarh for services offered at ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme), PCDA (Principal Controller of Defence Accounts), and the Armed Forces Tribunal.

“This service will immensely benefit our community and also the local population who rely on Chandigarh for medical facilities like PGIMER, academic institutions such as Punjab University, and government offices,” he said.

Widespread Local Support

The campaign for this bus route saw strong backing from local leaders, including Pradhans of Gram PanchayatsNarola, Kot, Baldwara, Bhambla – and the Chairman of Municipal Council Sarkaghat. All submitted official letters of endorsement, demonstrating unified support across the region.

The coordinated efforts of the ex-servicemen’s organisation, local leaders, and persistent follow-up with CTU authorities culminated in the successful launch of the service. Residents have called it a “timely and necessary step”, particularly in the context of limited transport options in the region.

Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide

The direct connectivity between Chandigarh and Sarkaghat is expected to not only make travel more accessible and economical but also foster economic and social development. By bridging the logistical gap between the rural interiors of Himachal and the urban facilities of Chandigarh, the service is set to play a transformational role in the region.

Locals believe that the bus route will:

  • Improve access to healthcare and education
  • Boost employment opportunities
  • Encourage inter-regional mobility
  • Strengthen emotional and economic ties between Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh

With the new CTU service now operational, Sarkaghat residents and ex-servicemen have gained a dependable transport lifeline, thanks to community-driven advocacy and responsive governance.
