UK-India Ties Strengthen Under PM Keir Starmer: New Trade Deal, Flights, and University Partnerships Announced.

Manchester Airport to Launch Delhi Route; £6 Billion in Investment Secured as UK and India Deepen Strategic Partnership.

London/Delhi:

The United Kingdom and India are entering a new era of strategic cooperation following the announcement of a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and a wave of new initiatives spanning aviation, education, technology, and culture.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, currently on a high-level trade mission to India, is spearheading efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and unlock economic growth through enhanced connectivity, investment, and international collaboration.

Major Expansion of Air Links: British Airways and Manchester Airport Lead the Way

British Airways, already operating the largest transatlantic network of any European airline, is expanding its global role by connecting more trade routes between the UK, India, and North America.

“British Airways really sits at the centre of that activity, acting as an enabler for increased trade. We will develop our network alongside growing economic activity, so the FTA is very good news for our business,” said a company spokesperson.

“We help connect India to the US and beyond. Add this to the FTA, and there’s a lot to be excited about for both our economies.”

In a significant boost to the UK’s northern regions, Manchester Airport will soon launch a new direct route to Delhi via Indian airline IndiGo, complementing its existing Mumbai service. This will make Manchester the only UK airport outside London with direct flights to both of India’s key cities.

Economic Impact: New Route to Generate £75 Million Annually and Create Jobs

The Delhi route is forecast to generate more than £50 million in annual exports, £25 million in tourism revenue, and create 450 new jobs. It forms part of Manchester Airport Group’s £1.3 billion investment programme, aimed at unlocking the potential of its two-runway system and driving economic development across the North.

Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said:

“We are proud to connect the North to the world, and this announcement gives businesses and communities across our region direct access to both India’s capital and financial hub.”

“This will create tens of millions in economic value each year, supporting the Government’s growth strategy and maximising the benefits of the UK-India trade deal.”

Universities Step In: Demand for Higher Education in India Soars

Joining the Prime Minister’s delegation are 14 Vice-Chancellors and university leaders, responding to India’s booming demand for higher education, with 70 million university places needed by 2035.

UK institutions see this as a major opportunity to expand international student recruitment, research collaboration, and joint campuses in India—key to unlocking new funding streams and long-term partnerships.

Creative Industries Open New Channels

Several of the UK’s top cultural institutions, including the British Film Institute and the National Theatre, are also part of the mission. They aim to build partnerships in film, theatre, digital arts, museums, sport, and fashion, creating opportunities for co-productions, talent exchanges, and cultural exports.

This soft power diplomacy is designed to elevate the UK’s global cultural footprint while supporting creative industries post-Brexit.

Rolls-Royce and Industrial Partnership with India

Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO of Rolls-Royce, praised the FTA and growing UK-India relationship, calling it a “win-win collaboration”.

“Our technologies and engineering capabilities across air, land, and sea make us a strategic partner for India’s growth in aviation, defence, infrastructure, and energy security. This collaboration will generate jobs and economic resilience for both countries.”

Tech & Security High on the Agenda

Prime Minister Starmer is also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build upon the UK-India Technology Security Initiative, first signed in 2024. The renewed talks will focus on cooperation in artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and defence technology, with an emphasis on joint innovation and national security.

India is rapidly emerging as a global tech powerhouse, with its technology sector projected to reach £1 trillion by 2030. The UK hopes to secure its role as a preferred partner in this growth story.

PM Starmer: “An Ambitious Global Vision for a Fairer, More Prosperous UK”

Speaking during the trade mission, Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasised the importance of international partnerships in driving UK economic growth and global influence.

“This trade deal and the partnerships we’re building across education, aviation, and technology show that Britain is back on the world stage. We are serious about creating good jobs, attracting investment, and forging relationships that benefit working people across the UK.”

The FTA, signed earlier this year, has already secured £6 billion in new investment and export wins, creating over 2,200 UK jobs.

With strong momentum and wide-ranging support across sectors, the UK-India relationship is now one of the most strategically important global partnerships—setting the stage for future prosperity, innovation, and shared success.
