Untimely Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Life in Lahaul-Spiti, Farmers’ Crops at Risk, says former MLA Ravi Thakur.

Shimla:

Unseasonal and intense snowfall in Lahaul-Spiti has thrown normal life out of gear, severely affecting farmers as their potato and apple crops remain stranded in fields and along roadsides. Areas like Yoche and Rangyo-Barayo have received more than three feet of snow, causing major road blockages and disrupting transport connectivity.

Former MLA and senior BJP leader Ravi Thakur expressed concern over the situation and urged the Public Works Department (PWD) to immediately begin restoration work on all blocked roads as soon as the weather clears. He emphasized that timely restoration is crucial to ensure that the region’s cash crops, especially potatoes and apples, can reach markets before they perish.

Thakur also appealed to the management of the Lahaul Potato Society (LPS) to promptly initiate the collection and transportation of farmers’ potato produce to prevent further losses.

“The snowfall has come at a critical time for farmers. Without urgent action, their entire season’s hard work may go to waste,” he said.

The heavy snowfall, while scenic, has raised concerns about livelihoods in the high-altitude region, making quick government response essential to prevent economic setbacks to already struggling farmers.
