Army Chief Reviews Operational Readiness in Central Sector, Highlights Community Outreach in Strategic Kumaon Region.

Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, undertook a comprehensive visit to forward posts in the central sector, focusing on high-altitude areas of Pithoragarh and surrounding regions. The visit aimed to review operational preparedness, boost troop morale, and strengthen civil-military cooperation in one of India’s most strategically significant terrains.
High-Altitude Operational Review
During the visit, General Dwivedi was briefed on the current deployment and operational posture of formations in the high-altitude zones. The Army Chief closely examined:
- Integration of next-generation surveillance systems
- Specialist mobility platforms for rugged terrain
- Optimised reconnaissance assets
- Coordination mechanisms with other security agencies
Lauding the troops for their discipline, professionalism, and tactical agility, General Dwivedi praised their innovative use of new equipment despite facing extreme weather and geographical challenges.
Troop Interaction and Morale Boosting
General Dwivedi interacted directly with personnel stationed in remote forward locations, commending their resilience, courage, and devotion to duty under adverse conditions. He invoked the Indian Army’s enduring ethos of “Service Before Self”, reaffirming the force’s full preparedness to counter evolving security challenges in the region.
He also extended Diwali greetings to all ranks and their families, adding a personal and festive touch to the tour.
Veteran and Community Engagement
As part of a broader outreach initiative, the COAS met with veterans and local communities, recognising their sacrifices and role in safeguarding national integrity. Emphasising the strategic and cultural importance of the Kumaon region, which borders both Nepal and China, he highlighted the area’s historical and ongoing contribution to India’s defence.
Focus on Development Under Operation Sadbhavna
Reviewing projects under Operation Sadbhavna and the Vibrant Village Programme, the COAS was apprised of various initiatives to boost border-area infrastructure and socio-economic resilience, including:
- Tent-based homestay tourism in Garbyang and Kalapani
- Development of road infrastructure
- Installation of hybrid power systems
- Regular medical camps for locals
- Agricultural support via polyhouses
He noted that the Indian Army in Kumaon exemplifies “strength with compassion”, combining robust border defence with meaningful community development.

Concluding the visit, General Dwivedi reiterated the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence, national security, and civil-military synergy. He affirmed the force’s dedication to upholding the highest traditions of duty, honour, and service to the nation, especially in regions of high strategic value.
